“The Lost Dogs: Michael Vick’s Dogs and Their Tale of Rescue and Redemption”

By Jim Gorant, with a new Afterword. Gotham Books. $16.

After Gorant’s highly praised 2010 hardcover narrative (see review in Picks of the Litter archives), the public has wondered about the disposition of many of the dogs, updates on dog-fighting and breed-specific legislation and relationships between of the many agencies involved. The new Afterword addresses all of these, along with Vick’s re-entry into the National Football League amidst continued controversy on talk-radio stations, web sites and newspapers nationwide.

More poignant have been the author’s appearances at high schools, shelters, rescue groups, book clubs and professional conferences, where he captures several memorable and inspiring incidents involving youngsters, some of which were highly troubled.
